Personal History

His major contribution was probably the re-discovery of King Henry VIII's Flagship the Mary Rose.

Alexander McKee was born 25 July 1918 elder son of a British Naval surgeon. He died in the summer of 1992 aged 72 years. In between he wrote the many books listed here. They span military history, underwater exploration and archaeology, real life disasters and mysteries.

His first passion was flying. He took his first solo flight at the age of 15 years. His ambition was to become a fighter pilot but poor eyesight prevented this.

His first works, a series of articles, was published in flying magazines before he was eighteen.

He served with the London Scottish and the Gordon Highlanders regiments during World War II. He served as part of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) during the occupation from 1945. Much of this time he worked for the British Forces (Radio) Network (BFN). His colleagues at that time included Raymond Baxter and Sir Cliff Michelmore.

He took up sub-aqua diving in about 1957. Later he started Project Solent Ships which led to the formation of the Mary Rose Special Branch 0551 (MRSB 0551) of the Southsea branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC)
